This course is an introduction to "throwing" clay vessels on a pottery wheel. Students will learn to center clay, create cylinders and produce small functional forms like bowls, saucers, and mugs. Students will also learn foot trimming, handle making, very simple decorative carving (chattering and chipping), and glaze application.
Students will be asked to come in on their own time to glaze final projects. Class is for teens and adults. Each course is comprised of 4 classes meeting from 6-8:30 p.m. on Thursday evenings.

Students can join instructor, Melody Wnuk to learn the basics of wheel throwing, decorative techniques, and glaze application in this 6 week Sunday afternoon class for beginners. Demos and hands-on instruction will be offered throughout the course.

This 5-week class will introduce the tools and techniques of stained glass construction. Students will learn the Tiffany method, also called the copper foil method, to create one or more projects that showcase the beauty of stained glass. Designs can be supplied, or students may wish to consult with the instructor about creating their own. Students who have no experience with stained glass are welcome, as well as students who have some experience but wish to build upon that foundation. All supplies and materials for this class are included with registration. This class is open to those age 14 and older.

Are you a friend of Phoebe’s? Come create your own delightfully offbeat portrait inspired by her quirky cousins, Gladys and Glynnis. In this fun mixed media class, you’ll experiment with assemblage, paper clay, and fabric sculpting—no experience needed, just a sense of humor! All materials are provided, so you can dive right in and try something new. Hang your creation proudly... or use it to give your friends a seasonal scare! This class is open to teens and adults.

In this workshop, Belinda will demonstrate how beginning with a dark underpainting creates a strong foundation for paintings that glow with brilliant light. As the painting progresses, she will guide students to explore the use of different pastel types, varied pressure, and the power of pure pigment instead of relying on "white lights" to capture luminosity.
Belinda B. Armstrong is a retired art educator with 25 years of teaching experience now focused on her studio practice full time. She has had several solo exhibitions and has participated in a number of juried shows locally and internationally. In the summer of 2024, Belinda completed First Stop Terrapin Park, circa 1913, a mural for the Parkersburg Floodwall Mural Project.

Students will use the slab roller and extruder then finish the project on the wheel. Students will make plates, coasters, spoon rests, trivets, textured mugs and vases. Prerequisite, previous basic wheel throwing of small pots.

Adults can join us for a fun pottery workshop where you’ll hand-build your very own WV themed gnome! Using simple clay techniques, form a gnome complete with a tall hat and beard. Participants will hand glaze the beard and boots. Instructor will bisque fire glaze the hat with your choice of color.
No experience needed—all materials and instruction are provided. Your gnome will be glazed, kiln-fired, and ready for you to pick up at a later date.

This is one of Tracy’s most popular classes! Come create a pop-art version of your favorite pet! We will use paint markers and acrylics to make our pets come to life! Private Painting and Pottery Parties
The Parkersburg Art Center offers private painting or pottery parties. These are perfect for team building, a staff retreat, gatherings with friends, celebratory events, and birthdays. With a minimum of five participants, we can bring your creative event to life—just email info@parkersburgartcenter.org with your request. Please start making those plans AT LEAST three weeks in advance so we can schedule an instructor!
Most classes require a minimum of 4 students in order to run and/or have maximum number limits so… PLEASE REGISTER IN ADVANCE TO ENSURE THAT YOU CAN GET INTO THE CLASS YOU WANT.

Sign up now for Private Pottery with Judy Keith on Wednesday evenings. Judy will instruct adults and teens ages 16 and up in a private session in wheel throwing. Students will learn the basics of throwing pottery on the wheel, centering clay, opening up, raising the wall, and shaping a form.
